      Overview

A cardiovascular diagnosis can be overwhelming for pet owners, making the role of the veterinary nurse essential in providing ongoing education and clinical support. This course is designed to empower nurses with the knowledge and practical skills required to manage these patients effectively once a diagnosis has been made. You will begin with a recap of the most common cardiovascular diseases affecting dogs and cats, ensuring you can confidently recall and identify the associated clinical signs.

The training provides a comprehensive guide to running dedicated nurse consultations, covering initial, follow-up, and long-term maintenance appointments. You will learn technical skills, such as how to obtain and identify common ECG traces seen in small animal practice, as well as the "softer" skills required to discuss and assess patient quality of life. By the end of this course, you will be equipped to provide a structured, compassionate service that improves both patient outcomes and client compliance.

      Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
      • Recall the clinical signs of the main types of heart disease affecting dogs and cats
      • Carry out initial, follow-up, and maintenance consultations for patients diagnosed with cardiovascular disease
      • Identify the common ECG traces seen in small animals
      • Discuss and assess patient quality of life as part of the consultation
