      Overview

This course is designed to encourage Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) and those in equivalent roles, such as VCAs, ANAs, and ACAs, to become more involved in the dental care of their patients. You will increase your knowledge of animal teeth, covering anatomy across different species and the importance of preventative dental healthcare for animal welfare. The training explores the causes and effects of dental disease, as well as the pre, peri, and post-operative measures required for patients undergoing dental procedures. By learning to identify specialised dental instruments and their unique maintenance requirements, you will be better equipped to support the clinical team and educate clients on keeping their pets' teeth healthy.

      Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
      • Identify the causes and effects of dental disease and how they affect an animal

      • Discuss preventative health measures that can keep teeth healthy
      • Consider the pre, peri and post-operative measures required for a patient undergoing a dental
      • Name the different dental instruments and outline their specific care compared to other surgical instruments
