      Overview

In a general practice environment, nursing "small furries" and ferrets can be a daunting task compared to the more familiar feline and canine patients. This course is designed to bridge that knowledge gap, providing you with the skills and confidence to provide an ideal standard of care for these unique species. Whether you are dealing with a guinea pig, chinchilla, rat, hamster, gerbil, or ferret, this training explores every aspect of their clinical journey.

You will explore the complexities of nursing care, from setting up species-specific hospitalisation environments to mastering emergency triage and compassionate euthanasia. The course also focuses heavily on proactive care, teaching you how to run effective nurse-led clinics and engage with owners who may not be aware of the veterinary support available for their pets. By mastering the fundamentals of exotic nutrition, husbandry, and common health conditions, you will be able to provide essential client education that directly improves the welfare of these often-misunderstood patients.

      Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
      • Identify ways in which you can encourage engagement with rodent and ferret owners
      • Create plans for rodent and ferret-friendly nurse clinics within your practice
      • Identify common health conditions in domesticated rodents and ferrets
      • Apply your knowledge to ensure correct care when dealing with hospitalised rodent and ferret patients, and euthanasia
      • Educate your clients on the proper care of their rodents and ferrets, including nutrition, husbandry, housing, and behaviour
“I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value.”
