      Overview

Hyperthyroidism is one of the most common endocrine disorders encountered in feline practice. This course is designed to refresh your understanding of the thyroid gland, beginning with its basic anatomy and physiology before progressing into the pathophysiology of the disease. By understanding how the homeostasis of thyroid hormones is maintained, you will be able to accurately extrapolate the clinical signs of hyperthyroidism and understand the multi-systemic effects it has on the feline body.

The course examines the essential feedback loops that regulate hormone production, providing a clear picture of what occurs when these systems fail. You will also explore the various treatment modalities available, from medical management and dietary restriction to surgical intervention and radioactive iodine therapy. By mastering these concepts, you will be better equipped to assist in the diagnosis, treatment planning, and long-term monitoring of these frequent feline patients.

      Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
      • Recognise the location and functions of the thyroid gland and how any abnormalities may affect the body
      • Arrange the feedback loops associated with thyroid homeostasis
      • Identify the potential treatments for hyperthyroidism
