      Overview

This course is designed for Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) and equivalent roles, such as VCAs, ANAs, and ACAs, who wish to support the earliest stages of a patient's life. You will explore the first moments of life, including the specific protocols involved in caesarean sections, and follow the developmental journey all the way through to weaning. The training focuses on how you can be actively involved in this process, with a particular emphasis on nutrition and understanding the unique needs of neonatal and paediatric patients. By learning to recognise specific risk factors and calculate nutritional requirements, you will gain the confidence to provide high-quality care during this critical stage of development.

      Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
      • Describe the developmental stages of a neonatal/paediatric patient
      • Recognise and approach additional risk factors for neonatal and paediatric patients
      • Calculate the nutritional needs of neonatal and paediatric patients
“I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value.”
